'Fugue States' (Vanguard Editions, 2018)

Picture
So, here for the first time in English, translated by Ana herself, is the work of Ana Teresa Pereira. It’s difficult to describe the style and content of her stories. The language is deceptively plain, unassuming—writing that doesn’t draw attention to itself—which is, of course, an accomplishment in itself, but what is really remarkable about these stories is their content. Think Rebecca as directed by David Lynch and you are half way there.

Ana Teresa Pereira lives on the island of Madeira. She has published more than 20 novels in her native Portuguese but this is her first book in English. In 2017, her novel Karen won Brazil’s prestigious Oceanos literary prize.
