New Fiction Writers - if you only buy one book... this is the one, 10 Jun 2013 By Pijo. 'Fiction Writing' by Richard Skinner has the touch of someone who is in constant contact with both budding new fiction writers and the more experienced scribblers. Skinner's long experience in teaching the craft of creative writing shines through as he gets into the mind of the inexperienced and helps you navigate the course to producing a coherent piece of fiction. The book is logical, practical, full of common sense advice and guidelines on how to develop and improve your ability to manipulate the literary craft. Other books have destroyed forests to impart the information contained in Fiction Writing. It's a deceptively easy, logical read and I would wholeheartedly recommend it as a first step to understanding the craft.
Buy this book, 9 Jun 2013 By Michelle. I loved this book. I've read many books on how to write a novel but have found this one the most interesting and useful by far. The quotations at the start of each chapter and the excerpts used from novelists are all useful and interesting and have made me want to read the novels themselves. There is a depth to each chapter which I haven't come across in any other 'how to...' book, yet it is quite a succinct size compared to a lot of tomes these days. I particularly enjoyed the chapter entitled 'Handling the Passage of Time' as so many examples of this area of novel writing are given besides the usual one of flashback. And the book is just as useful for writers of some experience as it is for complete novices. In fact I've enjoyed it so much that having renewed it several times from the library, I have just bought a copy!
If you only buy one book on writing... 6 May 2013 By Hanife. I have quite a few books on how to write, but this is the one I always go to when I'm stuck. It is comprehensive and has just the right level of information whatever my question might be.
Brilliant! 21 Jun 2012 By H. I admit that I wasn't sure at first when I saw only one person had reviewed this book, but I am SO glad that I did go through and buy it anyway because I love this book! The way the author puts things and explains them is not only a great help but all of the techniques and thoughts behind things are very interesting. I've been trying to write a novel for many years and I'm sure that with some of the tips in this book that I am a whole lot closer to realising my dream.
Excellent Book 15 Feb 2012 By L Sheehy. I have avoided reading books on creative writing for most of my life, but this book is written by a very well-regarded British author and teacher of an MA course in creative writing at one of London's leading universities and this shows in the book, which is instructive and engaging written by someone who is obviously an expert and a deft master of their field. For anyone contemplating a novel, read this first. It won't be a waste of your time and will make your first draft a lot better!
